When JD Sports opened on Thursday morning, a queue stretched from the doors to the shopping complex out to Crown Street Mall.
The last time there were queues in the mall for a store opening was H&M in September 2016.
The first 50 people in the JD Sports queue scored a free shoe care kit, with the others keen to get a glimpse of a "new range exclusive to the Illawarra".
From time to time, shoppers left the store carrying bags full of freshly-bought sneakers.
The sneaker and sports fashion retailer is the first of six new shops announced for Wollongong Central, which has just emerged from a months-long lockdown.
