The gelding surged to the front with 200 metres to run, holding off a fast-finishing Kypreos to claim a 2000m BenchMark 72 by a nose.
Apprentice Brock Ryan delivered a superb ride, securing The Guru's fourth victory from 28 starts.
The win marked a momentous occasion for the trainer, the celebrations from Bateup and her owners reflective of the significance.
"They are a fantastic group of owners," Bateup told Sky Racing. "I'm so rapt for them.
"I've finally got my Randwick winner, my first one at Randwick. I've had plenty of placings and we've always had a lot of faith in this horse.
"He's actually been a little menace all day today, so he's forgiven a little bit now. He's done a super job all preparation, just didn't handle that heavy track last start, and Brock's riding superb."
