Kiama Council and residents were opposed to an application to rezone the land to allow for residential development.
However the Department of Planning Industry and Environment (DPIE) approved the rezoning.
On Monday, opponents including Kiama Central Precinct chair Mark Greaves headed to Parliament House seeking a meeting with Planning Minister Rob Stokes.
That meeting was set up by Kiama MP Gareth Ward after being approached by Kiama Council candidate Mark Croxford.,
"At the meeting, we presented community concerns with respect to the lack of strategic merit, lack of supporting infrastructure, inconsistency with local, regional and state planning documents, the current lack of a forward-looking local housing strategy and the impact of the planning proposal on the village character of Kiama," Mr Ward said.
"As a result of our joint advocacy, we successfully convinced the Minister to reconsider this proposal. Minister Stokes has agreed to an independent review of the Department's recommendation."
Mr Stokes will work with Mr Ward on the terms of reference for the review.
