Brilliant Blooms, the bespoke florist and giftware store located just outside of the village in Balgownie, was established in 2017 by mother and daughter team, Sarah and Jessie.

After completing a floristry course together, Sarah and Jessie decided to turn their new found passion into a career where they can showcase their skills to others and provide a range of gifts and floral arrangements for any occasion.

"During this time there have been many obstacles, especially with COVID, continuing restrictions and a slower economy, so we have had to reinvent our business several times," Jessie said.

Not able to rely on functions, weddings and large events during these uncertain times, Brilliant Blooms have restyled their store with new fittings and have made window-shopping a thing of the future.

Within the works of the year, they have also created a new body care range. This became a necessity for providing Australian made and locally manufactured products to their customers during lockdown as well as a fundraising tool to use as donations to various charities.

A portion of the profit made by selling their product gift packs will be donated at the end of each month to a local charity.

During the month of October Brilliant Blooms created a Christmas atmosphere within their shop, stocking a large range of unique and stylish Christmas decorations including a range of Jim Shore Collectables - focusing on the 'Grinch', Australian Christmas decorations, Christmas candles, gifts packs for easy gifts and various artisan chocolates.

Brilliant Blooms is a finalist at the Illawarra Business Awards in the Best Customer Service category and Jessica Turney is a finalist for Young Business Leader.

"This is an amazing achievement to be a part of and we are so excited to be finalists for these categories," Jessie said.

In May this year, Jessie was also announced as the Illawarra Women In Business 'Young Business Woman of the Year' - which is a great achievement.

"We believe we are finalists for these categories as we pride ourselves on providing a wonderful customer atmosphere and love to make sure that everyone who comes into our store has 100 per cent of our attention," Sarah said.

"We always ensure our customers' needs are met by updating our giftware and finding new products to stock within our store as well as creating different bespoke arrangements to suit any occasion. We have a very strong entrepreneurial spirit and always strive to better our business and helping others in any way we can, using our business as a platform to do so.

"These awards allow people within the community and those further past the Illawarra, the knowledge of the skills, capabilities and talents of those in small business - showcasing what they have to offer and further developing themselves and their customer basis."
