Marco Reus grabbed the 85th-minute winner for Dortmund, who were again missing the injured Erling Haaland but cashed in on Bayern's surprise 2-1 loss at fellow Bavarians Augsburg on Friday.

Dortmund's Dutch forward Donyell Malen scored his first Bundesliga goal since signing for EUR30m ($A47 m) euros from PSV Eindhoven in the 56th minute.

But Stuttgart levelled seven minutes later with Roberto Massimo latching onto a through ball, shaking off two markers and beating Gregor Kobel.

Reus grabbed the winner on the counterattack from a Stuttgart's corner, tapping in the rebound after Florian Muller had saved Thorgan Hazard's initial effort.

The result gave coach Marco Rose a club record with seven home wins from seven home league matches since taking over this season.

"We believed because we were always pushing," said Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

Bayer Leverkusen moved fourth thanks to a 1-0 home win over Bochum, winning with an early goal by Amine Adli, his first of the season.

Inconsistent RB Leipzig's lost 2-0 at Hoffenheim. A mistake by goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi gave Diadie Samassekou an easy header for Hoffenheim's opener. Munas Dabbur bagged the second as last term's runners-up dropped to sixth.

Gulacsi said: "We absolutely deserved to lose. We didn't start well. That was our worst performance of the season so far."

Wolfsburg came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at second-bottom Arminia Bielefeld while Borussia Moenchengladbach are now four unbeaten in all competitions following a 4-0 victory against hapless bottom side Greuther Fuerth.

Union Berlin are fifth after beating Hertha Berlin 2-0 in a late derby game.

The hosts led early through Taiwo Awoniyi after a mistake by Hertha coach Pal Dardai's son Marton. Christopher Trimmel netted the second.
