The beloved park has become a hot issue in the Shellharbour council election this weekend, with almost all candidates uniting behind the push to have management of Killalea taken from Crown Lands and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Members of the Save Killalea Alliance met with Environment Minister and Treasurer Matt Kean in July to push their case, and are optimistic the park will be removed from the hands of Reflections holiday parks, which had sought to develop more tourism facilities there.
This week Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said she had been assured a decision would be made public within weeks.
"I spoke with Matt Kean, NSW Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Environment, just last week in Parliament, and he gave me a personal assurance that an announcement regarding the future of Killalea is imminent and to expect to hear something before Christmas," Ms Watson said.
"Its been two long years since the Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward MP, announced that the NSW Government had awarded a $6.5 million grant to Reflections Holiday Parks, for the upgrade of facilities at Killalea.
"My community has been waiting a long time for some closure on this issue.
"I want to see Reflections given the boot from Killalea for good. Their proposed plans for the reserve are not supported by the community and the way they have gone about things is simply disrespectful to local residents."
Mr Kean's office said he couldn't comment at this point but the announcement of a decision can be expected soon.
Details were still being worked out as to the way forward.
Community protests and a mass surfer paddle-out have been held to demonstrate how locals value Killalea and its beach, the Farm.
