While large hail struck parts of the northern suburbs shortly after 6pm, the Bureau of Meteorolgy cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning in place for Sydney and the Illawarra.
EARLIER: The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm alert, warning of destructive winds and giant hailstones in coming hours.
The weather will hit parts of the Illawarra, Hunter, Metropolitan, and Central Tablelands forecast districts.
Locations which may be affected include Bowral, Gosford, Cessnock, Maitland, Penrith and Katoomba.
If severe thunderstorms develop in Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued.
A trough moving north along the coast is leading to thunderstorm development on the ranges inland from the coast.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
Move your car under cover or away from trees; secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony; keep at least eight metres from fallen power lines; report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093); unplug computers and appliances; stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

The next warning is due to be issued by 7:15 pm.
