'Fernleigh', located at 2 Dido Street, Kiama is for sale via Expressions of Interest.
The original property was five acres and the site of Chinese market gardens.
'Fernleigh' was built in the 1850s by George Atkinson, a fruiterer and engineer from Kissing Point.
His son Thomas and wife Kate moved from Cambewarra in 1871 with their two sons and daughter, after which time they had a further six daughters, and Kate ran the home as a boarding house, helped by her daughters.
It's also believed the home was at one stage used as a stopover for Cobb and Co coaches.
In 1945, the property, which now consists of 1.1ha (2.5 acres), and is part of the Spring Creek wetlands was purchased by surveyor Edwin Johnson, and has remained in the family ever since.
The main home is covered by a local heritage order and is currently divided into four sections, with the main house consisting of a large formal dining room, lounge room and six bedrooms.
The main home hasn't been lived in for the past year, although there are also three two-bedroom units which are currently tenanted.
The seller, who wished to remain anonymous, lived in one of the flats until the age of nine.
The family also bred greyhounds at the property.
"I have memories of billy carting down Dido Street, and the dairy farm behind us," he said.
"It's a place with a lot of history. It could be beautifully done up as a wedding reception venue, if you had the money to spend you could do the flats up and turn them into accommodation, or return it to being a guesthouse."
Selling agent, David Hall from First National Coast and Country said "with some TLC, this home could easily be restored to its former glory".
Mr Hall said there wasn't currently a price guide because of the "uniqueness of the property - there's nothing really comparable in the area".
