That's why the Illawarra voted Best Friends For Ever Rescue Illawarra to be the worthy winner of the latest round of #GreaterIllawarra community funding.
Best Friends For Ever Rescue Illawarra received $2000 after taking out the public vote in November.
Director Tay Ljiljak said the money will be an enormous help for the organisation that is run entirely by volunteers.
"We are a local, no-kill rescue in the Illawarra region and we pride ourselves on having a fantastic team of animal lovers who give up their time to help these animals who have no voice," she said.
"We are a not-for-profit organisation that relies on the generosity of supporters and volunteers to cover the costs of vet bills, emergency surgeries, kennelling, and keeping the dogs fed, happy and healthy until we can find them their forever homes.
"We adopt a no-kill policy and look to assist as many dogs as possible by either getting them adopted or placed into foster care until such time as we can find them their forever home.
"We are totally reliant on funding and donations so with COVID putting a big dent in those activities of late, we are delighted to have been successful in the #GreaterIllawarra community funding program."
Greater Bank's Illawarra regional sales manager Greg Creagan said owning a dog comes with significant responsibilities.
"Looking after a dog is a real commitment and we know it doesn't always work out, so services like Best Friends For Ever Rescue are really important in ensuring good longer term outcomes in those situations," he said.
"Greater Bank is pleased to be able to contribute to their ongoing operations through the #GreaterIllawarra community funding program."
Other funding recipients were Hidden Harvest and St Luke's Preschool.
The December round of the #GreaterIllawarra Community Funding Program is now open, with Fifty for a Farmer, Wollongong City Gymnastics and Empower Me Program in the running for a share of $3,000 in monthly funding.
Members of the Illawarra community can vote online at www.greater.com.au/greaterillawarra until 5pm, December 22, 2021.
