The new shade cover has been installed and covers half the 25-metre pool.
It is designed to reduce UV rays and help visitors to the pool, stay out of the sun.
South32 Illawarra Metallurgical Coal contributed $31,920 from its Dendrobium Community Enhancement Fund towards the cost of the shade cover and its installation.
IMC vice president operations Peter Baker said the project was undertaken in partnership with Wollongong City Council.
"Western Suburbs Pool is a popular venue, attracting around 150,000 visitors over the spring and summer season," he said.
"It's great that so many people will benefit from the new shade cover and stay safe in the sun.
"South32 Illawarra Metallurgical Coal is very proud to support our communities with investments like this.
"We look forward to making even more of a difference in the future."
Wollongong City Council general manager Greg Doyle said the Western Suburbs Pool was a favourite place to stay school during the warmer months for many residents.
"We appreciate South32 IMC's investment to upgrade this asset," Mr Doyle said.
"The new shade cover will be appreciated by swimmers using the pool to cool-off this summer.
"The shade cover at Wollongong's Western Suburbs Pool has been engineered to withstand strong winds and designed to be removed during winter months to preserve its life. The swimming pool is open now and free to the public."
