Minister for Sport, Richard Colbeck said the new funding will help boost the event's international profile with more than 300 million expected to watch the race around the world.
The announcement was made as Wollongong 2022 announced course routes at an event in City Beach, Wollongong on Friday.
"The UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be the first in a decade of global sporting events heading to Australia culminating in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games," Minister Colbeck said.
"Wollongong will host 1000 riders from more than 75 countries, with 5000 staff and supporters. This is estimated to deliver an economic benefit the arrival of an expected 300,00 spectators.
The event will bring significant disruption to Wollongong over the eight days with road closures in the city and all the way up to Helensburgh but Wollongong 2022 chair Dean Dalla Valle said the funding will ensure the city will benefit from the event in the longer term.
He said: "Australian Government investment in these initiatives will ensure significant economic and broader holistic benefits for the nation, the sport and the local community of Wollongong, which is incredibly proud to host this global event.
