Jyi "Jyiro" Westaway had finally finished some Australian bird designs for his mum's bins and shared pictures on them on local Facebook groups in case anyone else might want a commissioned design.
To his surprise, people were jumping at the chance with bookings made from around the Illawarra, Campbelltown, Southern Highlands and the Shoalhaven.
"This week I've done 48 [bins], I'm booked out next week, and the following week I'm starting to book out also," Westaway said.
"I didn't expect it blow up as big as it did."
The spraypaint artist has also been commissioned to create murals on two different bed-and-breakfasts venues and parts of peoples homes, including a chimney.
Westaway's work can be seen the world over having created murals across Europe, in Singapore, plus at home in Shellharbour and in Wollongong.
One of his works can still be seen in one of the Wollongong Central's carparks (a tribal patterned fish), a legacy from a previous Wonderwalls Festival.
Westaway first got into art as a youngster, around the age of seven or eight, and would eagerly await the weekend paper to see the illustrations from his favourite sports cartoonist.
"His name was Boo Bailey ... and he used to do like 'player or sports star of the week'," he said.
"My dad always read the newspaper, I'd wait for that paper every Saturday and then I'd copy the drawing out of that."
Westaway has been an artist ever since and has been involved with youth workshops through Shellharbour and Wollongong Councils, as well as anti-graffiti programs.
The artist is heading in 2022 with a busy schedule, but you can still contact him to turn your trash into treasure. One bin will cost you $30 while three will be $75.
"It's mainly Australian stuff [people ask for], pets are a big one as well at the moment," the creative said.
"There's a dog breeder I did the other day who bred Labradors, and I painted three Labradors."
