Emmett Brown, who also goes by the name Emmett Langlo, pleaded guilty to a host of domestic violence-related charges as details of his brutal, degrading and possessive behaviour towards the woman were laid bare in Wollongong Local Court last week.
The court heard Brown and the woman began seeing each other on August 2018, with the first assault occurring less than a month later in the home of his grandmother, prominent Aboriginal elder and Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation chairperson Lorraine Brown.
The woman told police she was packing her bags to go home and see her dying aunt when Brown punched her in the nose, causing it to split open.
He apologised a few minutes later, telling her "I didn't mean it", however punched her in the face again later that evening out of jealousy because she was talking to her cousin.
The incident marked the beginning of months of abuse, during which time Brown repeatedly reminded her he had nine guns and was a member of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang in a bid to intimidate her.
In early November that year, Brown threatened to "shoot" the woman's "whole family" during one incident, then punched her in the face and tried to choke her in another incident, which was witnessed by his mother and brother - the later of whom came to the woman's rescue, dragging Brown off the woman before she passed out.
The court heard the woman learned she was pregnant that same month, however Brown continued bashing her, at times punching her in the stomach.
The woman suffered a miscarriage in January 2019, telling police the ultrasound showed the baby was not developing properly.
It was not suggested in the agreed facts that Brown's behaviour caused the woman to miscarry.
Meanwhile, Brown again punched and tried to strangle the woman two months later in March 2019 after she asked to go see her father interstate.
The court heard police spoke to her about an unrelated matter a few days later and asked about the visible bruising on her neck, however she lied to them about the cause, suggesting it was from a necklace she'd been wearing.
She later told detectives he'd been "too afraid" to tell them the truth, fearing what Brown might do to her if she revealed the assaults.
Brown was arrested for serious domestic violence matters against his cousin that same month and remanded in custody.
The court heard the victim ended their relationship while Brown was in jail and disclosed the assaults to police in a statement in September 2019.
Brown was released on parole in December 2019 then returned to prison in August 2020 on further, unrelated offences.
Brown was not charged with these offences until June this year.
Meanwhile, friends and family of the victim also gave statements to police about what they witnessed during the relationship, with one describing it as "toxic" and another saying the victim had been "a shadow of herself", with Brown being violent, controlling and possessive.
Brown remains behind bars and will face Wollongong District Court on February 2 for a sentencing date to be set.
