The clash was the only first grade game to be played across both the South Coast and Illawarra competitions on Saturday as the rain continued to wreak havoc with the summer.
All Illawarra 50-over matches were abandoned on Friday, officials hoping the season will resume next weekend. The forecast, however, is not looking positive, with more wet weather predicted.
The South Coast draw provided clubs with slightly more flexibility, teams scheduled to play two Twenty20 matches throughout the day.
The morning slate was quickly abandoned, with Croome Cricket Oval deemed suitable for the afternoon clash between The Rail and Kiama.
It was the visitors who prevailed in tricky conditions, reaching 5-119 with the bat before bowling their opponents out for 105.
Hartgerink was pleasantly surprised they got on and said his team will grow from Saturday's win.
"Hopefully we can get some consistent cricket and get on a bit of a roll now," Hartgerink said. "Hopefully we can win some games over the next few weeks and sneak into the top four.
"Saturday gives us confidence we can do that, but we've got a long way to go. We haven't played particularly well early in the season.
"The start of the new year is a bit of a circuit breaker. To start with a win against a good team is definitely a positive. We've got some good young players, if we get some momentum, I think we can do quite well."
Liam Mackrell set the tone with the bat for the Cavaliers, producing an unbeaten 44 in favourable bowling conditions.
The Kiama bowlers then made the most of the pitch to tie down The Rail batsmen and take wickets at regular intervals.
Josh Norris finished with figures of 3-23, while Hyeon Parsons claimed 2-19.
With both batsmen and bowlers delivering, Hartgerink said Saturday was a complete performance.
"We batted pretty well considering the wicket was what it was," Hartgerink said. "Liam made 44 and was by far and away the best player of the day.
"I thought 119 was going to be competitive, but The Rail are a good team. We haven't beaten them in a while and they generally bat pretty well. Our bowlers bowled well and we held most of our catches."
