And it was a group of children who led the effort, taking up brooms and shovels to stop water from an overflowing creek on their property from entering a home.
Millie Schulz was at home at her family's Buttenshaw Drive property when her uncle rang to say his home was flooding.
The property has two homes, one where Millie lives with her mum Kylie and younger brother Arlo, 10, and another where her uncle Jamie lives with his daughter Bon, 9.
Despite the family having owned the property for about a decade, Millie said the tiny creek that runs between the two homes "usually has no water in it or just a trickle".
But that all changed today.
Millie said the family first noticed there was a lot of water flowing through the creek at about 9am during a bout of heavy rain, but it soon settled back down.
Then about 11am she received the panicked call from her uncle to say his house was about to flood.
So while he tried to build a barrier out of timber to try to stop the water entering the house, Millie armed herself with her broom, while her cousin took up a shovel and the two worked tirelessly for about 15 minutes to stop the water getting in.
"Then it just stopped and dropped a bit," she said. By this afternoon, the water in the creek had dropped further, and her uncle has managed to put up another barrier to hopefully direct the water away from the house should it happen again.
Mum Kylie, had been about to join an important work video conference and warned her children not to disturb her when Millie banged on her door.
She took the video during a break from helping stop the rising waters entering the home and was understandably proud of the way the children pitched in.
"I think she was pretty proud that we tried so hard," Millie said. "It was quite a scary experience. It was just really shocking how quickly it happened.
"One second it was just a little creek and the next thing there was water everywhere."
