But that seems to be the case with the Liberal candidate for Cunningham Marcus Uren.
Mr Uren didn't drive down from his home at Eagle Vale, near Campelltown, for Friday's ballot draw, instead being represented by a party member who wouldn't say much of anything about him.

Several attempts to get information about their candidate from the NSW Liberals also drew a blank - though they did incorrectly inform the Mercury last week that their Cunningham candidate was a local.
The list of candidates on the ABC electorate page for Cunningham includes a Facebook-like generic silhouette instead of a photo of Mr Uren - while all others have supplied photos.
Not even the official Liberal party website listing all candidates has a photo of Mr Uren - nor does it have a profile of him.
Indeed, as of Sunday, that site doesn't even mention that there is a Liberal candidate for Cunningham.
Mr Uren's social media pages are all private, and he appears to have removed the profile photo of himself from them since Friday's ballot draw.
He also appears to have removed his Linkedin page since Friday's draw, though not before the Mercury found it and noted he previously worked at Woolworths but now works for a Sydney-based industrial supply company.
We also know Mr Uren ran on the Liberal ticket at last year's Campbelltown Council election, where he was placed eighth on a party ticket of nine.
He only got 36 votes, which is par for the course when you're that low on the ticket.
So, why offer up a mysterious candidate from out of the area?
Well, part of the likely reason is to help the Liberals' vote in the Senate.
The Senate vote is decided statewide, so votes in each electorate count.
Having a candidate in each seat makes it easier to hand out how to votes for both houses of parliament.
Though, when Mr Uren agreed to help out the party, he may not have been expecting to come under such scrutiny.
