The steam train will shuttle thousands of passengers from Wollongong to Scarborough and back on the Queen's Birthday weekend, with each ride taking just under an hour.
The Picnic Train event is run by a group of dedicated volunteers, including Lost Wollongong founder David Bottin.
"The steam train rides have proved very popular since our first weekend in 2019," Mr Bottin said.
"Last year we sold all the seats two weeks early.
"We're hoping to establish it as a major annual tourism event for the Illawarra.
"Everyone from kids through to grandparents love steam trains.
"There's nothing quite like them and they never fail to draw a crowd."
Over three days, organisers expect to shuttle 6000 passengers using 20 tonnes of coal and 100,000 litres of water.
The train will depart from Wollongong 10 times a day from June 11-13. Details at picnictrain.com.
