Work has started on the playgrounds at Bulli Beach Reserve, Rube Hargrave Park in Clifton and Rae Crescent in Balgownie, and a Wollongong City Council spokesperson says they are expected to be finished by the end of June, depending on weather.
The old play equipment at Bulli is gone and is due to be replaced by a large slide, swings, climbing frames, accessible carousel, wheelchair trampoline, balance trail, toddler track, imaginary playshops and sensory panels and chimes.
The Rube Hargrave Park playground will include a large double slide, spinner, balance trail, and swings, while the Balgownie playground will feature swings, large slide, climbing frame, and balance trail.
The council spokesperson said works on the playground at Wongawilli Community Hall were also planned but a formal start date had not been set.
Cawley Park in Russell Vale and Guest Park in Fairy Meadow are also set to receive upgrades in the future.
Earlier this year, a new playground was unveiled at Central Park Reserve in Haywards Bay, with play equipment that included a large slide and climbing net, trampoline, swings and spinner.
In 2014, Wollongong council adopted a play strategy under which it committed to overhauling the city's playgrounds.
There are 147 playgrounds from Helensburgh down to Yallah.
