'Great for Wollongong': What residents think of city's midnight fireworks plan
With Wollongong CBD to have midnight fireworks for New Year's Eve, residents said they would be keen to stay local to ring in 2024.
We asked six people in Crown Street Mall what they thought of the new plan, which is being funded by Illawarra Hotel owner Ryan Aitchison to liven up the city, which normally only has 9pm fireworks at Wollongong Harbour.
All of them expressed support for the idea.
Mark Hume, Wollongong

"I live right in town so I love coming into Wollongong and watching the fireworks, it is great for the community. I have been to Sydney heaps of times but I think Wollongong puts on a good show."
Marcus Roche, Mount Keira

"I think so. It's a nice thing to have it down here in town and to have the option to watch."
Harry Ross, Bankstown

"I think having the fireworks here would be beneficial. People would be drawn down here. It is an event, people love events and getting together to see great stuff."
Jaqui Croft, Kembla Grange

"If it was in Wollongong instead of going to Sydney, it would be a much better alternative, specially if I want to have a couple drinks."
Arezou Naeimian, Wollongong

"I live in the CBD, I don't drive, I find it hard to catch the train."
Alicia Banforth, North Wollongong

"I prefer to stay in Wollongong for New Year's, it is where everyone I know is. I would rather stay down here than travel to and from Sydney. It's a nuisance to travel back or find accommodation when it is expensive."
