WALCHA (NSW) Saddle Bronc rider Carl Green has won the double at the richest rodeo in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association, the Mt Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo. The win will ensure he is one of the 15 qualifiers for the October 24-28 Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals at the Warwick Showgrounds. Green won the open Saddle Bronc at Mt Isa and then won the international challenge from a rider from North America. While there was good representation of North American riders at Mt Isa, none won any of the open events. The winners of each open event at Mt Isa contested the international challenge against a rider from North America. Proserpine rider Roy Dunn won the open Bull Ride against a strong field. He was injured during the rodeo so was replaced in the challenge by Sam Woodall who ended up victorious. In the Bareback Bronc ride, Wandoan cowboy and current APRA titleholder David Worsfold was victorious. Chase Erickson from North America won the challenge against Worsfold. Riders to win open events at Mt Isa and also the international challenge were Rope and Tie champion Mitch Eastwell from Warwick (Qld) and Breakaway Roping champion Cherie O’Donoghue from Lockington in Victoria. The Over 55 years Team Roping was won by Jeff Miller and Alan Woodley The Mt Isa Rodeo rates with the Warwick and Cloncurry rodeos as the top three in the APRA. The winners at Mt Isa will be among the favourites for the national finals in Warwick. All competitors take points from the pro tour (October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2018) into the finals so the Mt Isa winners have made a strong challenge for titles, even before they head to Warwick. Prizemoney is used to determine the top 15 so a win at the richest rodeo on the circuit, Mt Isa, has boosted their season prizemoney and title chances. In a change to the finals format, the first round will be on the Wednesday night, October 24, at the Warwick Showgrounds. Rounds 2 to 4 will be on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Second division and junior events will be held across the four days with most of the finals on the Sunday in Warwick.
