The company operating an Albion Park nursing home has been ordered to appoint an administrator to run the facility or risk being shut down after an audit found serious breaches in health and safety regulations.Daintree Aged Care will not be able to accept any more residents for six months, with the Federal Government halting all funding for new residents. The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency audit found Daintree, which is operated by Calendula Pty Ltd, had placed the health, safety and well-being of its residents at "serious risk".Poor management of residents' pain, medication, wounds and safe behaviour were identified as key problem areas. An inadequate number of appropriately trained staff was also raised as a serious risk. The Department of Health and Ageing stepped in on Wednesday night in response to the audit report, ordering Calendula to immediately appoint a government-approved administrator with clinical and nursing experience for six months and agree to provide proper training for employees. Failure to do both would see the company lose its accreditation. Federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot said the agency would visit Daintree each day while serious risk remained and the Department of Health and Ageing would monitor the home to check that action was taken promptly by the provider."When aged care providers fail to meet their obligations the Government will act to protect our frail and elderly citizens," Ms Elliot said."We are committed to continuing to work in partnership with older Australians, their families, staff, unions and care providers to improve the quality of aged care in Australia."Anyone with concerns about the care or welfare of residents should immediately contact the Aged Care Complaints Investigation Scheme on 1800 550 552.
