A 60-year-old Berkeley man drowned yesterday swimming at an unpatrolled area of Puckeys Beach, Fairy Meadow.Police say the man was swimming with some children of neighbours just north of the lagoon entrance shortly after 5pm when he got into difficulty. Some nearby swimmers helped bring the man to shore where he was worked on by an off-duty lifeguard. The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival.A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the cause of death.Sergeant Steven Egbers of Wollongong police said Puckeys Beach was notorious for its undertow and rips and people should always swim between the flags."People must learn to swim at patrolled beaches," Sgt Egbers said."People who picnic at Stuart Park and decide to go for a swim should always swim between the flags at North Wollongong Beach."
