Bouncers blamed for 12 per cent of pub assaults

18 Mar, 2010 12:39 PM
Bouncers are responsible for one in eight assaults at pubs and clubs, according to a crime report released today.

The briefing paper blamed security guards and other staff for 12 per cent of assaults in pubs and clubs in the 2007/08 financial year.

Patrons of licensed premises were responsible for assaults, with 77 per cent of offenders found to be patrons, evicted patrons or people refused entry.

Of 381 police reports analysed, 62 per cent of victims in such assaults were patrons or prospective patrons; 22 per cent were staff or security guards.

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research commissioned the study after releasing its first list of the 100 most violent pubs and clubs in NSW in March 2008.

The list included The Harp Hotel, the Glasshouse Tavern, the North Wollongong Hotel, the Ocean Beach Hotel at Shellharbour and the Palm Court Hotel at Corrimal.

An updated list released last September included the Towradgi Beach Hotel, the Harp Hotel, Castros, North Wollongong Hotel, Hotel Illawarra, Ivory, Dapto Leagues Club and Shellharbour Workers Club.

BOCSAR's briefing paper released today, titled The Nature of Assaults Recorded on Licensed Premises, said the top-100 lists did not give enough detail about the nature and location of the assaults, prompting further research.

One can understand how violence does occur in and around licensed premises and that yes bouncers do have to put up with this and defuse the situation. It does seem however that they simply add fuel to the fire when they forcefully remove people and just move them on. I have seen one person ejected from a a popular nightspot, dragged out by his own hair. You can imagine he wasn't to happy and it would appear he was being removed from the premises due to his intoxication levels and not because he was violent. This does not need to happen and a simple "sorry mate you've had enough come back next time" must surely be a better way of doing things. Might i add this particular premises is well known among my mates for it's particuarly rough bouncers.

Maybe there should be also Police present and patrons that do not understand word: NO would be taken by Police from there. Good luck bouncers!

bouncers are meatheads - I make no apologies for generalising. Having said that, this town has some bad drunks.

In my limited experience with pubs (& to a lesser degree, clubs) most bouncers have very limited communication skills. They probably have very poor social skills as well...

13 Illawarra venues in a list of 100? What a recommendation! The probem with drunks is that oherwise reasonable people llack the power to reason, so it is not much use saying 'no' Many years ago a social worker who counselled aldoholics, said that if they turned up drunk to their counseling sessions, they were put in a taxi and sent home. There was no point in seeing them. This is more serious than rowdy, drunken people getting into fights.

As someone who worked as a doorman for over 10 yrs, never have I been more disgusted at the treatment of the general public by some of these people that pretend to be nightclub security. I think these fellas need to be made aware that THEY HAVE NO RIGHT OR POWER TO ASSAULT PATRONS. No matter, how intoxicated a patron is. The power of ones words and voice should be more than enough to deter. I remember my fave line was, "come back next week mate ...all forgotten" and I made sure they came and saw me the following week & I gave them entry. I gave respect...they gave it in return. Worked EVERY TIME. These days they think they have the right to intimidate and then assault. maybe it's time more of these security??? guards were charged themselves and their licence revoked. this may help to clean up the industry. my two cents...

90% of the trouble is caused by 10% of the crowd, the same faces pop up time after time. The truth is there are both some patrons and some security staff who love a blue and any excuse will do ...I believe one or two appearances in court on an assault charge would soon change those attitudes! As someone who has worked in and around the industry, and been a patron of many, for nearly 30 years the constant thing I have noticed is the failure of the Police to consistently enforce the law. As recently as last weekend I observed a cluster of Police standing around “chatting” to young girls while a group of 7 intoxicated young men urinated in a nearby lane way.

In many Melbourne pubs the security are recruited from security firms, the "bouncers" are much more aware of their responsibilities both legally and socially. Their performance is rated by the client {the pub} and their future shifts and employment are dependent on them lawfully performing their duties satisfactorily. It seems that any steroid taking no-neck can get the job in NSW and the results speak for themselves. Bring in a drinking license { like a cars } and watch the regularly agro drunks walk away from a bar without a drink...you beauty.

my son is a bouncer and worked in Wollongong. He worked at some of these pubs and one of the problems is how the manangement did not back up their security. Secondly they used cheap unliscened guys who do not know a thing about security. Also some security firms only hire the guys who are thugs because they are cheap. I think there is blame all around. What about when security try to put people out and management let them back in.

Not only do you have to protect yourself from wayward drunks but the security staff too? !!!!! OMG !!! Should I be sending my teenagers to martial arts class to learn self defense ?
