The taps will be turned on in Bundanoon today as the last still water bottles are pulled from the shelves and removed from fridges.
The Bundy on Tap initiative will be officially launched at 10am as the town becomes the first in Australia to become "bottled water free".
Retailers in the Southern Highlands town will now only sell refillable water bottles. The basic Bundy on Tap bottles will sell for $3.50 - around the same as a commercial bottle of water - while a commemorative bottle will sell for $29.
Bundanoon to vote on bottled water banBottles can be refilled for free with chilled filtered water available in stores. From today, four filtered water stations on the street will operate 24 hours a day and another water station has been installed at Bundanoon Public School.
Bundy on Tap spokesperson Huw Kingston said the community hoped to show the world that consumers no longer had to pay the environmental and financial cost of bottled water.
"As was demonstrated by the intense media interest from all around the world, it's extremely heartening that our small town has become an international role model for grassroots action," he said.
"Each and every one of us can make a real difference at the very local level."
