 Church sacks minister Gordon Bradbery

Church sacks minister Gordon Bradbery

10 Sep, 2009 03:15 PM
The Reverend Gordon Bradbery - one of Wollongong's most popular and, at times, controversial clergymen - has been sacked by the church he has served for 23 years.

He has been told his services as minister at the Wesley Uniting Church on the Mall, where he has worked for the past 15 years, will no longer be required at the end of next year.

Rev Bradbery is also likely to have to relinquish his job as chaplain for the NSW Police Service and Rural Fire Service and his roles with Lifeline and the meals for the needy program.

He will remain an ordained minister of the church but his future role is uncertain.

His sacking, which came a fortnight ago in a secret ballot of the church's presbytery (a committee made of ordained and lay representatives from the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands), has shocked and saddened his loyal congregation.

Several members of the congregation who did not want to be identified, yesterday told the Mercury they believed Rev Bradbery had been targeted by conservative forces inside the church unhappy at his unconventional style, outspoken views and high public profile.

The Uniting Church requires that each minister who has served in a church for 10 years must reapply for what is known as an extension of call every three years.

Just weeks ago, the Wesley Church on the Mall church council had voted unanimously to recommend Rev Bradbery be granted the extension.

Yesterday, Rev Bradbery confirmed that the council's recommendation had been refused firstly by a state committee of the church's synod before being passed to the presbytery, which formally rejected the recommendation on August 26.

When asked why he thought he had been sacked, he replied: "I prefer the church gives you the answers you seek. The church has already given the congregation those answers."

  • Yesterday afternoon, presbytery chairman David Jones denied that Rev Bradbery's political and theological views had influenced the decision to terminate his services from the end of 2010 when his extension of call expires.

"The answer is simply that all ministry leadership within the church is reviewed at 10 years and to extend beyond that is unusual.

"The decision of the presbytery was taken over a whole range of issues and in context of how that extension might impact on Gordon, the congregation and the Uniting Church.

"We had a strong sense of the standing the community has of Gordon. He has a fairly unique place there and we affirm that.

"All organisations have renewal," he said.

Port Kembla psychologist and member of the Wesley Church on the Mall congregation Donna Waters, contacted the Mercury yesterday to say she was shocked and aggrieved.

"Gordon Bradbery's impact on people's lives in the Illawarra is profound," she said. "He truly lives with his theology on his sleeve, not hidden behind doctrine that can't be challenged or questioned.

"As a spiritual seeker and fellow human deeply interested in authentic relationships based on love, equality and social justice, I would be appalled to think that this decent man is being shafted due to his contemporary theology."

If the Illawarra Mercury has ever needed to keep the pressure on a story it is on this one. We just can't afford to lose someone who is street wise and can relate to the people, specially the younger ones. Gordon has done a lot of good for the people of the Illawarra and it is our turn to show him how we can stand behind him. Go the Mercury do your STUFF.....

What a sad, sad event. Rev Bradbery conducted two of our daughter's weddings, Grandmother's funeral, and the christening of three grand-daughters. A decent, deeply religious man, he was our reason for coming back to the Church. His humility and the unique way he has of making Christenings, weddings and funerals part of life on earth and the place of Christ in these events, has given help and comfort to thousands. As Police Chaplain, we know the help and comfort he has brought to grieving families. God Bless him. We will follow him wherever he goes.

The heading of this article, is misleading, but I guess it creates a headline. What has happened is that Rev Bradbury's term as minister has come to an end. Every minister position within the Uniting Church is not a "job for life". Every person who goes becomes a minister knows this. It is in the interests of the person and the congregation that there is change over and succession planning. A congregation periodically needs some change and that is what is happening. He will certainly be missed from his present positions, but I am sure he will still be very active within Uniting Church.

RonP, it's thinking like yours that causes these type of issues. There is an old saying"If it ain't broke, don'e fix it" The congregation voted unanimously to grant Gordon an extension, but local and internal politics raised its ugly head.

David Jones should hang his head in shame and the congregation should boycott the Wesley Church in the Mall until this matter is reversed.

Shame on you David. Whats the problem? I believe that when someone who has done such a good job as he has within the Church and Community you are supposed to reward them not s$%t on them. We as a community cannot let Gordon leave, in the end it will be our loss. I agree with you Susan, keep this one in the front pages Mercury, lets stand behind the man who has stood behind so many people within the Illawarra.

I am in tears after reading this. Wollongong has had so many evil and corrupt leaders over the last 30 years - Gordon was the only person in the public arena who I really felt was honest, approachable and had everyone's best interests at heart. I hope Gordon and the Mercury fights this! If he cannot his position back I hope he runs as an Independant candidate for Mayor.

Well someone knew the likely outcome. This is an extract from a community forum, R U happy wrote: "ONE DOWN, GORDON BRADBURY WILL NOT KNOW HIS FUTURE TILL ... ... is correct but it was not mentioned Gordon Bradbury may not be reappointed ... "" Don't Christians believe that when one door closes another opens? Sometimes we are jolted out of our comfort zone ... and now's the time Gordon!

An amazing man that deserves so much better than this......

If the Uniting Church is trying to encourage people to join, this would be the best way to stop that. I am not religious but I have been to several weddings and funerals held by Rev Bradbery and he makes you want to believe. Not because he rattles on and on about the Lord on a pedestal but does it in a way that makes him sound like an average human being! I hope they reconsider their decision.

It is amazing to me that in an age of declining church attendance, the Uniting Church makes the decision to end the tenure of a man who was helping to reverse that trend. Rev Bradbery's ministry was relevant to today's society, combining religious ideology with the modern, human touch. This decision was no doubt made by a panel of aging individuals who are threatened by a man who was helping to bring the church out of the Dark Ages. I always said Rev Bradbery was enough to make me turn religious. Thanks to this decision I am even more determined to stay resolutely atheist. You can keep your church.
