Church wall eroded by wee and sex

Church wall eroded by wee and sex

17 Apr, 2009 10:44 PM
Wollongong's Wesley Church of the Mall has weathered many storms, but the latest affront is attacking its very foundation.

Police have been called in to safeguard the 127-year-old sandstone building that is being eroded by people both urinating and fornicating against the walls.

The problem, which has also led to a discolouration and stench along the base of the church, was reported to police by Reverend Gordon Bradbery about six months ago.

"This has been going on for years but has become more prominent in recent times," he said.

"It's indicative of the behaviour of people in the mall, particularly those who come through inebriated.

"That sandstone is part of the original structure that was put up in 1882 so it's over 125 years old. It's just a complete lack of respect."

Wollongong Police Inspector Brian Wyver said samples taken from the building had shown a variety of human waste, including urine and semen.

"There is evidence people have also been fornicating against the church wall,'' he said.

Insp Wyver said since the church reported its concerns, regular police patrols had been conducted in the area.

"We have been issuing quite a few tickets. People should also be aware there is video surveillance in this area,'' he said.

"This isn't just an act of offensive behaviour, it's a separate crime that covers attacks on religious buildings."

Rev Bradbery said a recent escalation in the crime appeared related to an absence of public toilets in the CBD, combined with the church's location on a busy thoroughfare that linked a number of licensed premises.

"I would say probably this was because there were no public toilets around Wollongong," he said.

"There used to be some public toilets down at the Town Hall but they're now closed so there's just no facilities in Wollongong at all for people after hours."

The disturbance to church services by hooligans had also resulted in police establishing a command post outside the building on Christmas Eve.

For anyone who owns property in the CBD, this situation is comon to us all.

I had teenage boys in broad daylight at around 5pm attending a surf club function urinating on my brick fence as I sat on my verandah facing them.

They did not give a hoot. I turned my hose on them.

I have also had make cyclist pull their penis out of their trousers and start urinating in the gutter.

Also gave him an earful and took a photo with my mobile phone and threatened to put it on the internet if he ever came back and did it agaon.

Had to get a locked high front gate to stop horny couples [sometimes more] having sex in my front garden on the walk between pubs.

I still find used condoms on the mulch in my rear carpark indicating they now use that as their sex venue.

Its is a commom problem in the CBD and not confined to the church.

Dear Gordon, I can't believe that you have had to spend your valuable time protecting the church and organization you are so committed to in reporting this story.

Many of us know what a busy clergy you are and again thank you for your work and commitment.

Can I suggest a fund raising concert to finance the electrification of the surrounds of the church as I can guarantee 100% that it will prevent any micturation, fornication and unnecessary procrastination of the establishment.

Well, you can hardly blame people for doing what comes naturally when there is nowhere else to do it. There used to be such things as public toilets - for a reason...now we have again miraculously discovered that reason how about the council do the right thing and put some in the mall.

The issue of CBD public toilets, particularly for after hours use, has been ignored by successive Council's for decades!

There is no way i would use a public toilet at night. The yobos would not only bash you in the loo they would probably wee on you for good measure. Remember th toilets in MacCabe park. There was always trouble. Why dont these filthy so and so's go home and wee on thier own house?

Lack of public toilets does not explain sex against a church wall, last time I looked there were hotel rooms available. Lack of toilets is no excuse for gross behaviour that is offensive.

I think that even if toilets were provided, many drunks would still opt for relieving themselves wherever they happen to be!. Perhaps security could patrol the mall on Fri and Sat nights, this would prevent possible violence and anti social behaviour. They do a similar thing in London with much success.

Drunken idiots, junkies and vandals are the reason there are no public toilets open after hours.

Try going in the pub or nightclub before you leave.

There is no reason for desecrating a church, whether you're religious or not!

As an Ex Wollongong resident I see that not much has changed in Wollongong's mentality in the last 30 yrs. Wonder what it will take for the residents to grow up? How about a campaign along the old line of "If you don't like it & appreciate it, stay away !"

Toilets would be a good idea but I hate it when your busting and rush in, drop em and after its done you look up in terror to realize that there is no paper.
