Conservation strategy to drive Gong harbour development

Future development at heritage-listed Wollongong Harbour is to be guided by a detailed conservation management strategy.Lands Minister Tony Kelly said Jean Rice of North Sydney-based Angel Hayes Pty Ltd had been appointed to complete the strategy, which will ensure heritage aspects of the harbour precinct are protected from development.The harbour and crane pedestal, two lighthouses, Flagstaff Hill and fortifications, Brighton Lawn, the old courthouse and several historic sea baths were included in a listing on the State Heritage Register in May.The listing does not preclude ‘‘limited, sympathetic development and adaptive reuse of the harbour,’’ but Mr Kelly has previously said if six expressions of interest for the revitalisation of the harbour precinct currently with his department do not conform to the conservation strategy, ‘‘they die’’.The strategy is due to be completed by mid-August and will be submitted to the NSW Heritage Council for approval.
