Heavy-duty cranes took up residence in Wollongong’s Harbour St yesterday before work starts next month to replace the damaged WIN Stadium western grandstand roof. The two cranes - one a behemoth 220 tonnes and the other a smaller 80 tonnes - were moved into position yesterday as construction crews erected scaffolding and prepared the site for the removal of the roof’s steel spine.Minister for the Illawarra Greg Pearce announced two weeks ago the roof had been redesigned and a more robust configuration would be lifted into place in the coming months. The revised plans show a slightly more rectangular design in contrast to the almost parabolic ends of the original roof.It was these ends that failed in strong but not unseasonal winds last September.Bolts supporting trusses on the roof snapped, sending the 150-tonne structure swinging in the breeze. The grandstand is due to be completed in time for the St George Illawarra Dragons’ much-anticipated match-up with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on June 8.Mr Pearce has been reluctant to blame any one party for the roof’s failure, instead saying on several occasions that the NSW Government was still investigating the situation.Meantime, NSW Public Works, the department responsible for overseeing public infrastructure construction, has lodged an application for the modified roof with Wollongong City Council. The document says once the application is approved, ‘‘it is proposed that the entire roof structure will be removed and then rebuilt in accordance with the amended design’’.
