Facebook gatecrashers storm party

02 Mar, 2009 01:52 PM
About 300 young people gatecrashed a party in Warilla at the weekend after the event was promoted on the social-networking site Facebook.

Police are still investigating how the party on Helen St spiralled out of control and resulted in police being pelted with stones when they arrived.

Two police cars were damaged and five officers sustained minor injuries at the event, believed to be an 18th birthday party.

Chief Inspector Danny Sharkey said police were increasingly being called to parties that had been promoted on social-networking sites, which he called the "Corey phenomenon."

Corey Worthington made headlines in Australia last year after he advertised his party on a social networking site MySpace, attracting more than 500 people.

The unrepentant host became a minor celebrity in the aftermath of the party, which caused $20,000 damage.

Many people are using new forms of technology to promote parties, even if it is not their own event.

"We were aware (the Helen St party) had been advertised and we did give advice about what they needed to do security wise," Insp Sharkey said.

"We're appealing for parents to sit down with their children and explain to them the dangers of firstly getting involved in things like that. We're also asking parents to have conversations with their teenage children about the consumption of alcohol, and to be proactive about where their children are."

Insp Sharkey said no charges had been laid after the party, but investigations were continuing.

Police also had to escort several intoxicated people home after the party.

"We are regularly being called to disturbances at parties, where there are gatecrashers and they cause trouble," Insp Sharkey said.

"If they're not allowed in they start causing trouble and damaging property, and this is happening right across the command. The other night was an exception because there were an extremely large amount of people."

People blame sites such as my space and facebook for advertising the events that get out of control BUT both sites have settings that the organizer can set that only allows invites to the requested people and those people cannot forward onto anybody else to see the page. If this was done then it all just comes down to word of mouth and that problem will always be there. It all comes down to common sense. Perhaps they should have an 18+limit on these sort of social networking sites. Even teens aren't the only culprits for loud parties and lack of consideration. My young kids were kept awake by groups of vocal people walking by our place & stopping out front to get picked up or a rest on the way elsewhere and loud noise all night Saturday Night by a party that seemed to have 18+ year old guests- some people have no consideration for people sleeping!

I know the parents involved and can assure everyone that they have had numerous discussions regarding acceptable behaviour. On this occasion, they tried their best, but it got out of control.

In response to Trent: How selfish and inconsiderate you sound.

Yes we were teenagers once but we were kept in line and weren't inconsiderate to other people and their property and had a bit of respect for the law!

Just remember you will be a grown up one day and hopefully by that time you will have gotten some commonsense and if somebody keeps you or your kids awake all night and you have to go to work the next morning- "how cool will that be then!?"

I was at the party. I believe the night was under control until the police turned up. When the police shut the party down and forced the 200 or so people that were there into the middle of Helen street and blocked off one end of the street therefore sending the pack in one direction was when the problems arrised. I do know that there were a number of underage teenagers under the influence of alcohol but I think the issue of our police force is more important than a group of kids trying to have a good night. It is true that you were all teenagers once as well and as stated below most of us were just trying to enjoy our friends birthday party.
