Gale force winds forecast

A severe weather warning for damaging winds in the Illawarra has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.South to south-westerly winds are expected to strengthen this evening, reaching gale force along the coastal fringe.Damaging winds averaging 65km/h with peak gusts around 90km/h are forecast for the Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven City and Wingecarribee local government areas tonight and early tomorrow morning.The State Emergency Service has asked people to stay clear of any fallen powerlines and to look out for anything that may be touching them.‘‘These objects can become live, including fences, debris, vehicles, trees and water,’’ a spokesperson said.For emergency help, contact the SES on 132 500.For life-threatening emergencies, call Triple-0.In case of fallen powerlines, contact Endeavour Energy on 131 003.
