Gay marriage bill to be introduced next week

09 Feb, 2012 03:24 PM
Throsby MP Stephen Jones will introduce his same-sex marriage bill to federal parliament next week, one of two such bills to be presented.

Mr Jones’ private member’s bill will be tabled on Monday, along with a second to be jointly sponsored by Greens MP Adam Bandt and Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie.

Both are likely to include protections for churches that refuse on religious grounds to marry same-sex couples.

Mr Bandt wants both bills referred to a parliamentary inquiry which is considering another piece of Greens legislation on the same issue.

Mr Bandt cautioned the best approach to get the laws through would be to take time and make it a cooperative multi-party effort.

He wants all MPs to vote according to their conscience. Labor MPs have been given a free vote on the issue, but not those in the coalition.

The Greens deny trying to usurp Labor efforts.

Mr Bandt said he tried to meet Mr Jones on Thursday morning to discuss cooperating on the issue but the Labor MP had cancelled.

‘‘I would be quite happy to talk about co-sponsorship, indeed that’s been our invitation from the beginning,’’ he told reporters in Canberra.

‘‘I just want to make sure that we see reform in this area and that we don’t see grandstanding.’’

Referring the two bills to a Senate inquiry would mean the best of all the pieces of legislation on offer could be put to a vote, he said.

Mr Wilkie reminded Opposition Leader Tony Abbott that Liberal party policy was to allow conscience votes on all matters.

‘‘It is only really a significant issue for members of the opposition frontbench,’’ he said.

‘‘It should not be any issue at all, as far as the party rules go, for a Liberal backbencher to vote in support of marriage equality.’’

Mr Abbott was attempting to coerce his MPs because he saw a political benefit in doing so, Mr Bandt said.

Comment has been sought from Mr Jones.

Congratulations Stephen Jones. At last a sensible, forward thinking ALP politician from the Illawarra. It has certainly been a while since we have seen one of that species.

Sensible! Try doing something that is good for 100% of the community - not a vocal minority.

What a waste of time. Greens and the LNP know they do not have the numbers for this to be approved so it is doomed before it begins. The real reason this is happening is for people like Bob Brown to make us think they are relevant. We know better. I can't wait for the next election so the LNP can seperate itself from the degenrate Greens that are holding a gun to the head of the LNP to push their absurd agenda.

Glad to see this issue coming to a head, once its been dealt with can you please start doing something constructive for your electorate Mr Jones.

The region needs some major projects to reduce the chronic unemployment that has plagued the region for as long as we've had Labor representatives. Need I mention the regions roads, rail, health systems?

Only an observation, but if I can see the deficiencies in policy objectives, why can't our politicians?

What else can anyone expect from this dysfunctional Labor Govt and a whimpoy local federal member who has nothing better on his agenda other than the Port Kembla Billy Cart derby and Homosexual marriage, these projects are sure to stimulate employment, better health services more money for Local Govt, more Police, better paid & more Nurses & the list goes on. Not a word on these issues by this dynamic local member, a fantastic result for the Illawarra & Wollongong in particular, which will be known as the Gay City or Wollongay if he has his way.

Yay! I'm fairly certain it won't pass (since Tony Abbott is a coward and won't let his liberals vote) but its definitely a step in the right direction.

It amazes me that people are against others displaying their love for each other.

If 2 people want to live together in a loving relationship who gave us right to stop them.

Good on you Stephen Jones keep up the good work.

good to see that Mr Jones is creating jobs. How you ask? well if this actually passes(which I hope it will) then marriage celebrants who are only casual workers will get some more work.

This is the only issue mr jones cares about. The only time one ever sees this man in the media you know what the subject is about. So many More important issues ignored in this region are being brushed under the carpet. Like trying to get a new hospital for the illawarra would be a good start. The patch up job known as wollonong hospital is simply not up to standard any more no matter how many extensions they make on it. Its still a third world hspital? Local residents deserve better..You have proven to be such A dissapointment mr jones. Bring on the next election
