Liberal Joanna Gash takes lead in Labor territory

24 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
The Coalition holds a crushing lead over Labor in the must-win federal seat of Gilmore, catapulting Liberal incumbent Joanna Gash to an election-winning position after just one week of campaigning.

An exclusive Mercury/IRIS poll of 400 voters this week shows Mrs Gash is ahead of Labor's Neil Reilly by 58 per cent to 31 per cent in the primary vote, with Greens candidate Ben van der Wijngaart trailing on 11 per cent.

On a two-party preferred basis, Mrs Gash holds a commanding 60-40 lead over Mr Reilly, which would deliver her a hefty 10 per cent margin on August 21 and transform the seat into a Liberal stronghold.

If only Cunningham would follow the wisdom shown by the voters of Gilmore.

nf we are hoping. Since the throsby boundary change Im a Gilmore Girl! Im hoping we in the new North of Gilmore we will have a chance to have some decent representation by Joanna Gash. Even her rivals can't knock her hardworking no nonsense appoach. Labour has to much in house fighting in Gilmor.. The residents don't want it. Good luck to Joanna Gash

The slowly changing demographics of these electorates is our only hope of removing the Labor carbuncle from the Illawarra. It never ceases to amaze me that many of these Labor voters vote Labor because their parents did. Like many Labor politicians these people have never had an original thought!

People of Cunningham they do not know who is Jo, dear pet of the Mercury. She is all blabla, but nothing more. Ask to the people of Nowra what she has done in all those 10 years. Nothing. Up dating Albatros naval base? No, that was in the defense department program

Yes nf - the Cunningham electorate has perplexed me for a long time. No matter what the state of our nation the voters never seem to change their vote. Labor through and through. I'm a swinging voter I admit, but I follow politics keenly and really give it a lot of thought before I cast my vote. Its really frustrating to watch how neglected Wollongong is because it'll never be a marginal seat.

Whilst a poll of 400 is not really a guide as to what the final result will be, it does reflect that the majority of those polled think highly of Joanna Gash. I was in Throsby but with the boundary changes am now in Gilmore. Assessing the candidates it would appear Ms Gash is far more visible, approachable and committed than her opponents so it is little wonder she has had a great result in the Mercury/IRIS poll.

Tranform it into a liberal stronghold? It's been one for decades...

Looks like Julia has to come to Gilmore to save the day for Neil Reilly! This would be the first visit by a sitting PM to Shellharbour. Maybe this week! This poll shows the Greens in Gilmore on track to double their vote, and certainly the one with the most management experience of the three major party candidates is Ben van der Wijngaart for the Greens with his 33 years in the RAAF. Gilmore will attract the attention of the election campaigns because it is marginal. Throsby and Cunningham need to become marginal, or minority held, to attact the funding the neglected Illawarra bady needs. Lib/Lab are just Fibs and Flab What the Liberals on this comments list fail to mention with their 'get rid of Labor' comments is that with Joanna Gash, you also get Tony Abbott. When the Liberals think the Greens can win a lower house seat, they preference Labor first, as they did in Cunningham in the last federal election. It is time for the numerous disappointed voters who support the two major parties to make that final break, and vote away, for any candidate that is not a sitting member, or a member of the two major parties.
