Of the $20.7 million to be included in next week’s state budget, $7.5 million will be used to start new work in the port’s outer harbour project.
“Work undertaken to date has resulted in a portion of the reclaimed area to be handed over to Cement Australia to allow them to commence construction of their facilities,’’ ports minister Duncan Gay said.
The next phase of the work will involve preparing detailed designs and technical specifications for the first new outer harbour berth, dredging of the shipping channel and berthing basin, and the reclamation of additional land for the handling of bulk cargo.
A further $3.5 million will be spent on a new access road to the outer harbour.
Almost $3 million will go to improving rail infrastructure in the inner and outer harbours, including a rail turnout replacement, track renewal and upgrades to rail lines in the inner harbour, including those leading to the coal terminal.
The remainder of the new funding will be used for land purchases and the replacement of the port’s pilot vessel.
