Authorities have warned up to 200mm could fall in coastal areas between then and Thursday afternoon, raising the possibility of flash flooding.
A severe weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms is in place for the Illawarra and South Coast, along with the Sydney metropolitan region.
Heavy rainfall is being driven by a deepening low pressure trough that is sitting just off the NSW coastline and will move south over the next 48 hours.
