Shoppers, stallholders slam Wollongong parking meters

20 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
Wollongong shoppers and market stallholders have accused Wollongong City Council of missing the point on the city's parking shortage, just days out from the official introduction of parking meters.

From Monday, motorists will be charged a $2 flat fee to park in half-hour, one-hour or two-hour zones, no matter how long they stay in the space.

Around the city, 141 "pay and display" parking ticket machines covering the 850 metered spaces will dispense tickets for motorists to display on their dashboards.

"Topping up" the meters will be illegal and motorists who overstay the time limit, whether or not they have a valid ticket, will be fined from Monday.

Council staff yesterday set up a "pay and display" parking machine and information tent alongside market stallholders in Crown St Mall. Only a few people stopped to ask questions, with much of the confusion about the rules affecting disabled people parking in metered spaces.

Mobility parking scheme permit holders are exempt from paying for parking, while there will be no change to existing rules allowing them to park for up to two hours in half-hour spaces and for an unlimited time in two-hour spaces.

Staff yesterday handed out maps showing the location of 32 free 15-minute spaces and the distribution of metered spaces. Rangers will also walk the streets next week to answer questions.

Yesterday, there was little support for the paid parking scheme from either shoppers or market stallholders.

Julie Bullock of Warilla said the shortage of parking already discouraged her from shopping in Wollongong and paid parking would be the final straw.

"I think it sucks. They have shot themselves in the foot," she said.

"They should be creating free parking because they are begging for more people to come into Wollongong to shop.

"If I have to pay for parking, forget it. I'll go to Shellharbour."

Weekly stallholder Terry Masterson said the meters would be detrimental to small business.

"It will drive people to free parking centres like Westfield and therefore small business suffers at the expense of larger business."

what a tragedy! We just got a free shuttle bus service remember? People who can afford cars pay a bit more to get into town, and those for whom cars are an unaffordable luxury, get the benefit of the free bus. It's about time the less well-off got the good end of the deal for a change! Anyway, $2 isn't exactly a fortune - and the bus is free to everyone, regardless of what they might normally drive. Now please stop whingeing - it's not the 1950s anymore!

The council have no idea or really care. They have no money therfore we have parking meters. Pure and simple. I will limit my shopping time in town.

I rarely visit Wollongong anymore because of the parking hassles. It is so much easier just to duck to Figtree or Warrawong. I could get to Shellharbour and back for $5 petrol and park there all day for free. I think Wollongong just made a very silly mistake for businesses.

It is my opinion that all Wollongong residents should agree to not use the parking metres. If this is done, how will fines be handled if nobody pays them- the courts will be flooded with thousands of non-payers. If nobody uses the machines it is my opinion that they will get rid of them. It is my opinion that it is time for the people of Wollongong to stand up against the idea of parking metres. I think that this present council should be removed. They seem, in my opinion to have completely ignored the people's wants & needs. For me, this is the last straw. I think this council is destroying Wollongong. Wollongong begs for tourists, yet they closed down the central info shop at the Town Hall site. Now, to further potential tourists to the Wollongong CBD, they are about to slug them (tourists) & esp. us, money we can't afford. I have many doctors appointments. Now I will be paying even more to get medical help. I love Wollongong, but will definately be shopping elsewhere. Please council, this time listen to the people of Wollongong. Aren't we already paying enough-how can we even live here anymore. Enough is enough. Please keep Wollongong the wonderful place I tell people it is.

as a holder of a mobility parking permit, I wonder if the use of these permits illegally will be policed on the meters, only once in 20 years of being a holder have I been checked. (Shellharbour Council) I know of several holders who`s cards are used by others. unfortunatly now with money involved ??

Will council now charge to park in the council parking station?

If the parking meter decision drives people to suburban shopping centres then nobody should be moaning ... its fantastic ! If people want their suburbs to develop, have services and have some sort of viable retail presence then they should avoid Wollongong CBD at all costs & shop as close as possible to where they live. If more people shopped at local retailers & used local service providers then a lot of the issues some suburbs have would be solved. Retailers open stores where they see a pattern of financial activity forming, so if you dont want to shop in the CBD because $2 is either a financial or ethical impost then support your local businesspeople, big & small, and help develop your suburb, oh, & park for FREE !

THe parking rangers must be frothing at the mouth with exitement. They no longer will have to mark the tyres, they can just stand there and watch the meter run out if credit and then pounce.
