Jamberoo's hills are alive with the sound of 150 young musicians this week - tapping, tooting and trilling their way through new musical territory and honing performance skills.Instrumentalists and vocalists from across the region are spending the week at Jamberoo Valley Lodge working on an eclectic repertoire covering everything from Bach to blues.Under the direction of professional musicians and teachers, they are learning how to cope with auditions and prepare for music examinations. The students, who range from Year 6 to Year 9, are working with the likes of touring blues duo Kane Dennelly and Jason David from 19-Twenty, and have the opportunity to perform in front of their peers ahead of tomorrow night's gala concert.Camp tutor Sarah Duggin said the students were relishing the chance to learn new pieces and to put their solo skills to the test as part of an ensemble."This camp is about getting kids performing with other students and gaining performance experience as part of a professional production," she said."And of course they are making new friends and having fun."Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts Year 9 vocalist Crystal Jones has been attending the annual five-day camp, run by the Department of Education and Training's Regional Arts Unit, since she was in Year 6."I've had heaps of fun this year - I did a few different workshops including a drumming workshop," she said."You learn new performance skills and gain confidence performing during the week before you step out onto the big stage at the concert, which is great."
