The Illawarra has gone off Labor, we're over the Rudd government's cash splash, but we're all for the federal takeover of health, a survey has shown. And the message to Treasurer Wayne Swan from the region's voters is that Tuesday's budget should cut taxes and assist low-income earners.According to an IRIS Research/Mercury poll in the Cunningham and Throsby electorates, the days of government spending should end.Asked about the impending budget, 30 per cent of respondents said assisting those on low incomes by increasing payments to pensioners and the unemployed was the most important thing the Government could do.Another 26 per cent said cutting government spending to avoid sending the country further into debt should be the priority. The Government's $42 billion economic stimulus package has been credited with keeping Australia out of recession, but has not been without its problems, ranging from a flawed insulation program to school hall funding blow-outs.However IRIS executive director Simon Pomfret believes Illawarra voters have the big picture in mind when they say enough is enough."I think people understand that our level of debt in proportion to GDP is high and this debt has to be paid back," Mr Pomfret said. "They feel it is not a problem for future generations to solve and believe the debt needs to be looked at now."The poll shows that support for Labor at a federal level in the Illawarra has fallen in line with a national trend. In 2007 Labor had the support of 59 per cent of Illawarra voters. If an election had taken place last Saturday, this would have fallen to 48 per cent, but the poll shows the Coalition and Greens would have received little benefit from the shift with "other parties" picking up the vote of the disenchanted."If an election was held now there would be no change even though the national mood for a shift away from Labor is reflected in the Illawarra," Mr Pomfret said."It is a message that people are a little bit unhappy with what is going on, but they are not yet willing to jump to the Coalition."There is overwhelming support in the Illawarra for the Government's proposed takeover of health, with 72 per cent of voters in favour. In total, 84 per cent of Labor voters backed the move, while just 24 per cent of Liberal voters opposed it.
