Ted Tobin, sports administrator and former alderman, dies

Ted Tobin, OAM, one of the Illawarra's most well-known and respected people, has died.The former Wollongong City alderman, sports administrator and renowned fundraiser died yesterday, aged 72.The father of three spent 13 years as an alderman (1971-84), 15 years on the Wollongong Sportsground Trust and three years as Illawarra County Council chairman. He was also a founding chairman of both the Illawarra Academy of Sport and Beaton Park Leisure Centre, spent 10 years as chairman as part of 20 years on board of Illawarra Leagues Club and 15 years as captain/president of Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club. Mr Tobin was a director of City Coast Credit Union for nine years and was made a Fellow of the University of Wollongong in 1992.He was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977 for services to local government and an Order of Australia Medal in 1995.
