Tsunami warning for Port Kembla, Batemans Bay

Tsunami warning for Port Kembla, Batemans Bay

15 Jul, 2009 11:06 PM
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a tsunami warning for large parts of the east coast of Australia.

  • Tsunami alert prompts hundreds of calls

The tsunami effects are expected at the following locations in NSW from these times:

  • Port Kembla after 09:45 pm (EST) Wednesday

  • Batemans Bay after 09:45 pm (EST) Wednesday

  • Eden after 09:45 pm (EST) Wednesday

  • Sydney after 10pm (EST) Wednesday

  • Newcastle after 10.15pm (EST) Wednesday

The BOM warned of the possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and the possibility of some localised overflow onto the immediate foreshore.

The State Emergency Service issued this advice while the tsunami warning remains in place:

  • While major evacuations in these areas are not required, people are advised to get out of the water and move away from the immediate water's edge of harbours, coastal estuaries, rock platforms and beaches.

  • Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to

shore. Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront.

  • Vessels already at sea should stay offshore in deep water until further

    advised.

  • Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of

dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore.

  • Check that your neighbours have received this advice.

Thanks for article by Megan Levy at 10.06 pm (30 minutes ago) and found via a Google: "tsunami warning batemans bay nsw" . As we are only just above sea level at Maloneys Beach, this and similar advice is most timely and helpful. Good wishes

Hi, Howerbird, wish you everything is ok. Have you see any strong waves hitting the beach?

I assume that all Illawarra residents have been informed of the contingency plan on what to do in a crisis like this ..ie where to go, what to do,how to maximise survival chances, how to assist. Lets face it, it is a possibility. I just forgot the drill thats all. I assume we would all go and hang out at the mayors place or wherever the pollies are and jump on their chopper when it comes for their precious arses.

Well, Bowerbird, glad you got the warning! We are 100mtrs from the water at Bulli and we had no idea of a warning being issued. Luckily we are still alive and here to learn that the warning had been lifted. How would a warning have been issued to the thousands of residents living along our coastline? One only wonders? I was on the internet at that time and saw no breaking news to warm people. Guess I should have logged back into the Mercury's site and I would've received this very comprehensive warning.

Hi Great to get early warning of impending tsunami, but where to go, that is the question? Perhaps it's best to put on the swimmers and stay put! Cheers.....Val Grills

It really is time we all got serious about being alot more prepared for a tsunami warning. Imagine if the next one is at 3.00am when most are asleep and there is a big tsunami on it's way! I survived at Kata Beach, Phuket in Dec 2004. I pray this latest warning will wake people up. It's nothing to joke about! Preparation is needed; community awareness, highly effective, fail-safe warning systems and evacuation plans. Please don't be complacent next time because a big one didn't come this time. The question is what will you do now to help yourself and others with regard to this issue? I've been branded a 'scare-monger' as have others but at least we're doing something and taking responsibility instead of expecting someone else to look after us at all times. How many realise this article was posted 21 minutes after the first wave would have arrived?
