Unanderra dad tried to kill child with knife: court told

A Unanderra father accused of trying to kill his toddler allegedly stabbed the child with a knife, a court has heard.Crown prosecutor Kristy Spiers told Wollongong Local Court yesterday a brief of evidence relating to the November 18 crime was being compiled and some crucial material was outstanding."The main material outstanding is the DNA," Mrs Spiers said. "The knife allegedly used by the accused on his two-year-old daughter ... the blood on it has to be analysed."The man, who cannot be named, appeared in court via video link, charged with one count each of attempted murder and wounding a person with the intention of grievous bodily harm.He was arrested at his Unanderra home on November 18 after reports a toddler at the address had suffered a head and brain injury. He allegedly attacked the toddler between 2pm and 2.30pm that day.NSW Ambulance paramedics allegedly found the toddler unconscious and not breathing when they arrived at the address. They treated the girl for apparent head injuries before she was taken to Wollongong Hospital and later airlifted to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick, where she remained in a critical condition for some time.Yesterday the man told the court he needed time to find private legal representation. Magistrate Michael Stoddart adjourned the matter until February 23.
