Bottleshops attract a few colourful types hanging about their premises but this bush turkey takes some beating. He spent the morning dodging traffic in Wollongong's rush hour before finding refuge in this liquid amber tree outside Tosti Cellars' inner-city bottle shop.Bush turkeys are mad about building huge leaf mounds for their gals in the wild but this one was way off track.

  • More bush turkey news: Bob the builder finds true love "A young couple tried to catch him when they saw him nearly get hit by a bus and it ended up leading them here," Tosti's Simon Hurford said. The bird, by nature shy and reclus-ive, positioned itself 6m in the tree in thick foliage where it peered nervously down at the passing crowd.WIRES was called but the bird's lofty position defied the officer's net.A few hours later he flew down from the tree and was last seen hightailing it east with the lunchtime crowd in Burelli St towards McCabe Park.WIRES spokesperson Val Hoffman said bush turkeys roam the scrub on the Illawarra's escarpment but she had never heard of one heading for the city. She said if anyone sees the bird they should call WIRES who would have a chance of catching it on the ground.
