Wollongong Harbour added to heritage list

05 May, 2010 01:12 PM
Wollongong Harbour and its surrounding areas have been placed on the State Heritage Register.

Planning Minister Tony Kelly made the announcement today saying the listing included the harbour and crane pedestal, two lighthouses, Flagstaff Hill and its fortifications, Brighton Lawn, Smith Hill fortifications, Osborne Park and its remnants of the historic tramline, the old courthouse and several historic sea baths.

Mr Kelly said some of the reasons the area was listed included its role as the colony’s southern outpost from the 1830s and its associations with the convict labour force which constructed the basin harbour from 1837 to 1844.

Wollongong MP Noreen Hay said: “The harbour is rich with local history, from being the southern most port in the colony, to a bustling coal port and finally as home to the Wollongong fishing fleet and current recreation uses.’’

“This illustrates the uses of heritage areas do change over time.”

In recommending to list the harbour and surrounds, the independent 11-member Heritage Council unanimously resolved that the listing “will not preclude the limited, sympathetic development and adaptive re-use of the harbour and precinct in line with the site’s identified heritage values”.

A most sensible outcome and good result following the tireless work of the community representatives and residents who fought to maintain one of the most significant historical features of the region. A big congratulations to ROC and NF5. A big result!

I can only ask why did it take so long. We have passed the bicentenary but still remain the youngest of any really great colonies yet almost every day we are removing what in another two hundred years will be lamented as lost for all time. We as nation are not pressed for space. Edward James

Great news for the people and city of Wollongong. I would like to see the history of the precinct be retold. Especially the story of the brave Pilot William Edwards, who was drowned in Wollongong Harbour in 1867 while attempting to bring a vessel to safety during the fury of a gale. Pilot Edwards drowned at sea during a second outing to a ship in distress. The lighthouse keeper's dog died of starvation on the rocks waiting for his master to return to shore. Local history should not be allowed to escape. It would greatly enhance this already beautiful place.

I, being the great grandson of Pilot William Edwards, wonder why when reading the historical events of early Wollongong, this man and his heroic deeds are never mentioned.
