Hawks import to make debut

Newly acquired import Tywain McKee is almost certain to make his Wollongong Hawks debut at this week's Top End Challenge in Darwin.McKee's signing has been officially sanctioned by the NBL and he is expected to receive his immigration clearance in time for Thursday's tip-off of the three-day pre-season tournament.The all-time scoring leader at Division One college Coppin State, McKee arrived in Australia on Saturday and showed no signs of jet-lag during his first full training session with the Hawks yesterday at the Snakepit.Fellow American Dave Gruber has completed his commitments with Frankston in the South East Australian Basketball League and will line up with the Hawks in Darwin.Off-season recruit Tim Behrendorff is the only unavailable player. The 211cm centre is making good progress from a knee injury and is on track to be fit for Wollongong's season opener against Perth on September 25 at WIN Entertainment Centre.Former Illawarra junior Keiran Gleeson trained with the Hawks yesterday and is a candidate to fill the club's development player role.McKee looked sharp for the most part yesterday and will undergo a crash course on the Hawks' offensive and defensive systems before the team flies to Darwin tomorrow."I had the chance to meet some of the players over the weekend and they were all very welcoming," the 23-year-old playmaker said."I'm looking forward to getting on court so I can start focusing on basketball and working with the guys to make us a better team."I've heard the fans are great here in Wollongong and they really get behind a hard-working team, so I can't wait to get out there and just compete to the best of my ability every night for our fans."Born in Philadelphia, McKee led Coppin State in points, rebounds, assists and steals in his senior year with the Eagles, earning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year award.Before arriving in Wollongong, he stayed in tip-top shape by participating in NBA Summer League camps with the Washington Wizards"The signing of Tywain now completes our roster for the 2009-10 season," Hawks chief executive Wayne Morris said.
