08 Apr, 2010 05:05 PM
Wollongong Hawks US import Tywain McKee has been given his marching orders by the club after a number of "off-court incidents" and he is now home in the US.

The Illawarra Mercury understands Hawks' management acted after three incidents this year.

McKee was scheduled to visit his homeland about the time the third incident was revealed to management and he was told he would not be re-signed with the club.

  • The statement issued by the Hawks today:

Today the Wollongong ahm Hawks have announced that American import Tywain McKee will not be returning to the club for the 2010/11 NBL Season.

Due to a number of off-court driving-related incidents involving Ty spread over several months which have only come to light the past fortnight, Hawks management and board have decided that Ty’s actions do not fit in line with the core values of the organisation and he will not be returning to Wollongong next season.

The issues were discussed between CEO Wayne Morris and head coach Gordie McLeod and then their recommendation was submitted to the Wollongong Hawks Board for the final decision.

“While we are disappointed to find out recently of a number of off-court driving-related incidents involving Tywain McKee, we as a community-based organisation feel strongly that our players need to uphold the core values of our organisation on and off the court.” CEO Wayne Morris said.

“Ty has many years ahead of him in basketball, we hope that he can grow from his experience, recover from his current back injury and we wish him all the best for his future professional basketball career.” Morris added.

The Wollongong ahm Hawks have already begun moving forward and will be exploring all options for the vacant import position for the 2010/11 NBL season.

“Gordie will now focus his attention on the remainder of the roster and that includes the vacant import position Ty will leave behind. There are many imports out there and Gordie and his coaching staff will continue to scout far and wide over the coming weeks and months.” Morris said.

The club expects to have a number of additional signings to announce over the coming weeks. These signings will join current players Mat Campbell, Larry Davidson, Tim Coenraad and Rhys Martin who have committed to the Wollongong ahm Hawks for the 2010/11 NBL season.

Why do coaches go overseas to find players. Use Aussie players.

I call shenanigans. Number one, he is a free agent - the Hawks have no right to 'send him home'. Number two, he is subject to at least two concrete offers from rival clubs - ones that are much more lucrative than anything the Hawks are willing to pay. Number three, it's not like the Tiny Pinder debacle or anything like that. A couple of speeding fines or a low-level drink driving sanction is hardly reason to cut the guy loose. Hawks are killing their golden goose.

Because they kick aussie players asses mate, tywain mckee could'nt even get a 2nd division NBA contract, yet had he stayed fit he would have easily been our COMP's MVP and would have proberbly got the hawks a second title.

rr- because the standard would be ..... well, just cr#p, without imports. The same as the standard of the football (soccer) in Australia. We need these imports to give the younger kids some experience. In an ideal world, yes, all aussie would be good, but that won't happen.

Its sad the way they have treated Ty. I agree all people make mistakes and the club should not of embarrassed him this way. He played hard for the club. They should of backed and helped him.The fans are not stupid. They are using this as an excuse to not try and sign him. I agree, they will regret it for not supporting him through a tough time. James

I would like to know why the Hawks Management allowed Mr. KcKee to have accesss to a company vehicle, when he had no licence and then previous offences????

i think all should get all the facts first not just some. ty deserved what he got, doing the right thing is more important than maybe winning & letting bad behaviour pass. ty pushed a lot of bad buttons, not just what you people think. hawks did the right thing & hopefully ty will be better for it once he thinks about it all.
