Corrimal opening bowlers Dean Merola and Brad Jardine helped put the Cougars in a strong position on day one of their round 14 Illawarra Credit Union Illawarra cricket game against second placed Helensburgh at Ziems Park on Saturday.

Merola claimed 4-20, Jardine 4-36 and Rob Fisher chipped in with 2-24, as the Burgh were bundled out for 83 in their first innings.
Five Helensburgh batsmen made double figures, but no one was able to make a significant score - the best being Mitchell McCrae with 21.
The Cougars already have taken first innings points, being 9-164 at stumps.
Graeme Batty contributed 35, Dylan Scott 22 and Chris McLean was 26 not out.
Bowling for Helensburgh, Sam Northridge has 6-48.
Wollongong also are well placed against Dapto at North Dalton Park, due mainly to the batting of Amit Balgi and the bowling of Jason Welsh and Shane Fanning.
After being dismissed for 171 in their first innings, Wollongong have Dapto 4-28 at stumps.
Balgi top-scored for Wollongong with 86, well supported by Malcolm Felgate with 35. Welsh has 2-5 and Fanning 2-11 with the ball.
Nathan Dufty took the bowling honours for Dapto with 4-33 and Tommi Bozinovski chipped in with 2-26.
Keira opening batsman Mark Johnston top-scored with 89 and number three Alex Lebsanft had 69 in their team's 6-261 against Wests at Figtree Oval.
Luke Boncampagni has 4-64 for the Red Devils.
Balgownie has Port Kembla on the ropes at King George V Oval.
After dismissing Port for 61, Bally declared at 1-63 and has the home team 9-56 in their second dig.
Competition leaders University were 2-33 in reply to Northern Districts' first innings score of 101 at Hollymount Park.
