University surge to top of the table

University reclaimed top spot in Illawarra men's hockey after premiers Albion Park were held to a 2-2 draw by Fairy Meadow in round 10 on Sunday.Uni leapfrogged the Park after thrashing Dapto 4-0 with Nathan Eastwood, Matt Burke, Flynn Ogilvie and Jeremy Huk on target for the Students.Fifth-placed Fairy Meadow led twice against the Park with team manager Anthony McInnes describing the performance as the best of the season."The boys were fired up and hopefully it's a turning point in our season," McInnes said."We've struggled to score goals but got one really early on against the Park and we lifted. We know we can match it with the best teams, it's just a matter of doing it consistently.Youngster Nathan Nikolich gave Meadow a dream start with a goal after just a few minutes and Meadow held the lead through to early in the second half when Steve Mayo grabbed Park's equaliser. Ross Thomas was in the best position to take advantage of a deflection near the Park goal to put Fairy Meadow 2-1 ahead, before Tim Burnham tied it at 2-2.In Sunday's other games, Wests retain third spot after a 6-2 victory over Mittagong, while fourth-placed Robertson drew 5-5 with Bowral.In this Sunday's round 11, Welby Field will host a triple-header beginning with Robertson v Wests (2pm). Mittagong then take on the Park (3.15pm) followed by Bowral v Uni (4.30pm). Dapto meet Fairy Meadow at Lindsay Maynes Oval (3pm). In the combined Illawarra/South Coast women's comp, Melissa Davis scored twice for leaders University in a 4-0 win over Fairy Meadow.Allison Mina scored twice for Wests Illawarra in their 4-0 victory over Gerringong. In the only all-Illawarra match Nikki Linoli was on target twice for Avondale in their 4-2 win over Figtree. Jamberoo and Albion Park drew 1-1, while the Rail 2 side beat Dapto by forfeit.Meanwhile goalkeeper Kea Hogan and Sarah Watson have been selected for NSW Country from the Illawarra team.The Country Championships are in Western Australia next month and the girls will be joined there by Steve Tuddenham, in the men's side.
