Ben Hornby likely to be a Dragon for life

22 Jul, 2010 05:00 AM
St George Illawarra will maintain their trust in captain Ben Hornby as the man to lead them to an NRL premiership.

After months of ongoing negotiations, Hornby is set to sign a new deal with the club which would see him stay a Dragon for life.

An announcement on Hornby's contract, likely to be for a further two years, is expected soon, possibly as early as today.

  • Full coverage of the Dragons

The 30-year-old Corrimal Cougars junior was appointed captain when coach Wayne Bennett took over last year and has played every game of the past two seasons.

After claiming the minor premiership in 2009, the joint venture club's legion of fans are desperate to see Hornby lift the NRL trophy at ANZ Stadium on October 3.

Retaining Hornby will virtually be the final piece in the recruitment puzzle for the Dragons this year, with New Zealand international Jeremy Smith likely to join the Cowboys or Sharks next year.

Smith and Queensland State of Origin forward Neville Costigan have been forced out as part of salary cap pressure after the club signed former captain Mark Gasnier to a rich 4?-year deal.

Talented under-20s winger Kalifa Fai Fai Loa is also likely to leave as he chases a regular place in the NRL.

Last year's under-20 player of the year, Beau Henry, signed with Newcastle after being unable to break into the NRL behind Hornby and Jamie Soward.

Hornby has played 218 games for the Dragons since his debut in 2000 and has formed a steady partnership with five-eighth Soward in the past two seasons.

The halfback - who started his career at fullback - also played three games for NSW and made one appearance for Australia in 2006.

what,s going on at the dragons? all these potentially great and great players leaving and yet a player like Dean Young retained for three years. Something not right here.

What horrible news, Hornby while a loyal servant is a very ordinary halfback. Would be better for him to head off to the UK and get a pension. Agree with you NF, if Hornby and Young went to the uk the club would be much better off.

    Don't worry, it's only a game.

Leave Hornby and Young. Those two are willing to take pay cuts to stay at the club. They don't take up much cap space. The real problem is Gasnier. He has already single handedly forced an Origin player and Kiwi international out of the club with no doubt more to come. I only wish it was he who signed for Newcastle. Go away Gasnier.

I hope i'm wrong but i don't think Hornby is a good enough half back to be in a premiership winning team.

Hornby is a great leader, he doesn't have to be the go to man, its Sowards job to run the attack, Hornby is there to steady the ship and take some pressure off Soward when required. Leave Young alone, I'm not his number 1 supported but finally he is playing in the right position, he isnt a hooker, he plays with alot of heart and would die for the Dragons, the whole team plays better when he is on the field. Lets try something different and support the club, it annoys me when so called Dragon supporters just complain, Dragons are on the top of the table because of the players and the coach. our job is to support them not criticise them.

"What's going on at the Dragons?" Umm I'll tell you what's going on - they're coming first by four points, and one of the greatest coaches of all time in any sport has just re-signed the player he annointed captain, that's what's going on.

Since when is a half back not a go to man?

A deserving signing. One of the very best from the great Illawarra talent pool. Good to see that the opinions of the astute (and qualified) coaches and selectors takes precedence over those out here with square eyes.
