Melbourne Storm should be banished

23 Apr, 2010 03:56 PM
Melbourne should be kicked out of the competition for their shameful demonstration of sheer arrogance. How could a club start rorting the salary cap so cynically only a few years after the Bulldogs were exposed and penalised so heavily for what was, until now, the biggest rort in league history.

Other rorts go on, of course they do, and then there are the technical breaches for which a few clubs are fined by the NRL annually. But this was from the top shelf - systematic cheating over a number of years.

The league hammered the Storm yesterday, as it should have. The club didn't deserve anything less than being stripped of premierships and minor premierships, forced to return prizemoney, fined, and forbidden from earning competition points this season. But they deserved more.

Sure, it will be humiliating for the club to be forced to step out against the Warriors at Etihad Stadium on Sunday with no chance of picking up competition points, no matter how well they might play, but it could be worse. They should not playing at all.

  • POLL: Can the Storm survive this controversy?

The league's deals with the game's television broadcasters, Channel Nine and Fox Sports, call for the league to provide eight games per week. If there weren't eight games, there are provisions in the deals for the league to earn less.

But, even in these days when the game could do with more funds and is anxiously awaiting an anticipated increase in earnings when the next TV contract comes around, that would be a price worth paying.

When it came to the salary cap, how much more of a warning that bald-faced lying wasn't on did the Storm need to have than what happened to the Bulldogs? The club is in disgrace, and is a disgrace. It has thumbed its nose at the league world and is getting its just desserts.

It has not been hard, in recent years, to find people from other clubs who reckoned the Storm were cheating the cap. Whether that was just jealousy at the Storm's achievements or not wasn't clear, but they have turned out to be right.

  • The salary cap is not foolproof, and never will be. It's the same in any high-profile football competition you want to mention. But it's one of the best things the NRL has going for it, and it deserves the respect of the clubs.

Melbourne stand naked in the game. They've been stripped of their comps and their cash, and they stripped themselves of their character. But they should think themselves lucky that they're still in the competition, because they should be gone.

Completely agree with this article. Storm no longer have any credibility, they should be banished from the game. 4 grand finals in a row, all because they could afford to keep the best players. People say the eels should now be crowned as the grand final winners of 2009. Thats rediculous, storm for a second time beat out teams like the brisbane broncos in the quarter and semi-finals when they could of made it too the finals? I don't know. All i know is that the storm should be banished, they have tarnished this sport forever. And for the people who say, "the players didn't know"..bull, they must of known. Never liked the storm much anyway..

GREG PRICHARD - your first line is disgusting for a so called "journalist" Melbourne got caught, as did many a team previously have been. Unfortunately this is on a much higher scale, but almost every team has had a breach, lets banish them all, shall we and get back to REAL FOOTball.

Not fair for the fans. How could someone like the one that wrote this article have a job?

Nothing surprised me what is going around. Why the Storm has been so heavy handed? Because they are from Victoria. That's all. Taken their premier titles away is childish. What happened on the ground should stand no matter what. Salary cap? Silly and stupid action. What ever happened to the free trade? In Europe this system is illegal. I do not like rugby but the game should be directed for people that played the game and not for professional inept. Be warned. Soccer is heading the same path And please, do not call "athletes" those beefeater boys.legend or super star

I have no problem with the club being fined heavily for breaking the rules. The precident has been set for other clubs to watch out how they operate. However, it is a big mistake not to let the club get points for playing the remainder of the season. Who will bother to go and watch them play. This punishment not only hurts the club but also the game in Melbourne.

I don't know why everyone seems so surprised. No other club could even contemplate having the same playing roster that the storm have.Club loyalty only goes so far,as the players say they are only in the game for a limited time so they couldn't keep taking pay cuts every season to stay there. No sympathy for them whatsoever.

The storm should be kicked out and News Limited fund a return of the mighty Illawarra Steelers. You naturally do feel sorry for the fans of Melbourne, having to put up with all the shite thrown at them by the hands of the administrators.

it interests me the level of complaint and outrage over this matter - nothing even close to this level of outrage was seen when NRL players were busted doing something even more morally outrageous

As a supporter of League and someone who pays to see NRL games I am disgusted. The fans have been rorted by Storm. Rules are rules if they don't like them then move on.... it's a case of greedy little back door deals. My sympathy lies with their dedicated club members, Storm supporters and players that had nothing to do with the fraud. When I payed to see a game I thought it was going to be fair. Dont tarnish the whole club just the grubs that lied and committed fraud against our beloved game
