Wests halfback scoops league awards

Wests halfback Blake Dureau capped a memorable season when he won the Paul McGregor Medal for the best player of the 2009 Illawarra Carlton League season.Dureau received the medal from former Australia, NSW, Illawarra Steelers and St George Illawarra Dragons centre McGregor, who coached the Red Devils to the 2009 premiership in his first season as a coach, at the annual presentation dinner at the Steelers Club. Dureau also was the highest points scorer in first grade with 124 and won the Frank Smith Memorial Trophy for best back.The George Grofus Trophy for best forward went to Shellharbour hooker Hans Schuster.Wests were the big winners on the night, also taking out the Coastline Printing Club Championship Trophy, Bob Brown Memorial Minor Premiers Trophy and the Bob Lowrie Trophy for the club scoring the most tries (95).Highest point scorer trophies went to Shellharbour fullback Jarrod Schodde in under 18s with 206 points, University of Wollongong Titans five-eighth Joshua Dean in VB Cup with 158 points and Thirroul five-eighth Joel Willoughby in second grade with 146 points.Helensburgh halfback and captain Jarrod Boyle took out the Alex Jack Memorial Trophy for under 18 player of the year.The VB Cup player of the year was Mt Kembla's Rob Churchin.
