South Coast rugby union fans are in for a treat when the NSW Waratahs take on the Western Force in a unique preseason double-header early next year at Shoalhaven Rugby Park. The Waratahs will play the Force in back-to-back trials on the same night on February 10 - one week before the start of the 2011 Super 15 season. Both clubs will be keen to wrap up the preseason with polished performances and opposing coaches Chris Hickey and Richard Graham are expected to name full strength squads, including several Wallabies. The Waratahs will bunker down for five days in Nowra and spend time in the community promoting the unprecedented double-header."We're always looking to take the team around the state to show we're not just a team for Sydney, but for all of NSW," Hickey said."Last year we went to the Far North Coast and the Central West of the state and the response was fantastic."The Waratahs generate great enthusiasm from the rugby public in the regional areas who rarely get the opportunity to see the biggest names in any sport in their own backyard."It's important for the strength of the game at all levels that we do our best at the professional level to give back to the grassroots, and not just in the populous metropolitan areas."Shoalhaven City Council management believes the games will be a significant shot in the arm for the region and is confident of staging "a fantastic show"."Knowing their commitment to take trials around the state, we started discussions with Waratahs Rugby quite a while ago about bringing a preseason match to the South Coast and it's great that it's all come to fruition," Shoalhaven City Council tourism manager Tom Phillips said."There's been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get it over the line, and now we're ready to make it a night to remember."The rumour mill has been in overdrive that something big was coming to town and a lot of people are really excited, so we're expecting strong ticket sales and a big crowd," Mr Phillips said. The Waratahs have played trials at Wollongong, Lismore, Orange, Newcastle, Gosford, Campbelltown and Bathurst in the past five years.Hickey personally inspected the ground and facilities at Shoalhaven Rugby Park and has given his stamp of approval."When you are playing back-to-back matches in the space of a few hours you have to be confident the field will stand up to it."Everything looks to be in order already," he said."It's a dedicated rugby field so it will hardly be touched before February."This means that we are going to have a great deck to play on, a fantastic location, a passionate crowd and a strong opposition."Tickets for the double-header are now on sale through the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre box office (1300 788 503).
